On a beautiful Tuesday night at Ken Lindley Field, the Yavapai College men’s soccer team welcomed the No. 1-ranked Pima Community College Aztecs to Prescott for a matchup that lived up to the hype.
After an intense battle, the Aztecs emerged victorious in overtime with a final score of 2-1, moving the Roughriders’ overall record this season to 2-1.
What started as a fast-paced game with end-to-end action for both sides slowly turned into a match in which YC dominated possession towards the end of the first half and start of the second half.
The teams went into the break tied 0-0 and after a plethora of scoring opportunities, the Roughriders finally broke through on the scoresheet with just over 11 minutes left to play in the match.
After a goal kick from Pima rattled around the midfield, sophomore forward Mael Lopes softly headed a ball that went perfectly to his fellow sophomore forward Iann Topete who was streaking to the Pima goal behind the defense.
Topete corralled the ball, touched it past the goalkeeper and tapped it into the net, giving the Roughriders a one-goal lead and sending the Ken Lindley crowd into a frenzy.
Unfortunately for YC, the good vibes didn’t last much longer as Pima tied the match just four minutes later on a free kick. The teams then went into overtime tied 1-1 and just three and a half minutes into the extra period, Pima scored the game winner to take home the 2-1 victory.
The Roughriders are back in action next Tuesday (September 13) at 3:30 p.m. in Prescott, Arizona, at Ken Lindley Field where they will face the Paradise Valley Community College Pumas.
