After dominating the possession to start the game, sophomore forward Mael Lopes put YC ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 17th minute of the match. Lopes corralled a throw-in, blew past a defender and tucked in a tough-angle shot to the far side of the Scottsdale goalkeeper that hit the post and ricocheted in the net.

Just a couple of minutes later, the Roughriders teamed up for a beautiful goal with some precise passing. Sophomore defender Danny Starweather stole the ball at midfield and passed it on to sophomore forward Iann Topete on the rush.

From there, Topete pushed the ball upfield to Lopes who crossed it over to sophomore midfielder Andrew Del Giudice who promptly distributed the ball past the SCC goalkeeper to the back of the net.

Topete took home the assist on the Lopes goal while Lopes took home the assist on the Del Giudice goal. Both goals were their first scores of the season and for Del Giudice, it doubled as a birthday goal as the sophomore also celebrated his birthday today.

The Roughriders took a two-goal lead into halftime and pushed it to a three-goal lead just seven minutes into the second half on Lopes’ second score of the game.

This time, Lopes beat a defender by popping the ball up over him and then finessed a shot with perfect touch over the SCC goalkeeper. Sophomore forward Jose Vega took home the assist on the goal.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Rushon Sandy played 77 minutes and made some flashy saves to keep the momentum in YC’s favor. Sophomore goalkeeper Liam Morris took over for the final 13 minutes of the match.

With a big lead, the Roughriders were able to cruise to a 3-1 victory with Lopes taking home five points on the day.
