SOCIAL ENGINEERING FRAUD SCAM
The Prescott Valley Police Department is putting this warning out for citizens in the Town of Prescott Valley. There is a new trend with scammers using social engineering attacks on victims to get their banking information. Scammers are seeking to convince customers that their online banking account has been compromised and the customer needs to change their password and provide the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) code.
The scammers are doing this by watching the Facebook page of various financial institutions and noting who likes their page or posts. The scammers then look those people up on social media and other internet searches to gain information such as full names, street addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, and other identifying information.
Then scammers search these people on the dark web for any compromised personally identifiable information such as Social Security Numbers or leaked account information. The scammers then use all this information to contact the victim and pose as the financial institution. We recommend that you never give out any account information on the phone or share your password on text or a call.
If you get a call like this, hang up and call your financial institution at a number you know to be correct.
