Volleyball’s Comeback Comes Up Short Against Eastern Arizona

The Yavapai College volleyball team welcomed the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters to Walraven Gymnasium on Friday night for the teams’ third and final meeting of the season. Despite a furious comeback attempt, the Roughriders eventually fell in five sets, dropping to 4-15 overall this season and 2-9 in conference play.

In set one, the Roughriders kept things close and trailed 15-12 after a nice block at the net from sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Gravitt. After that, EAC went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-12 lead which paved the way for a 25-16 victory.

Looking to tie the match up, freshman outside hitter Abby Whatton gave YC an 11-10 lead in set two with a ferocious kill. Like set one, however, EAC took over and built an 18-13 lead and cruised to a 25-20 set-two victory and 2-0 match lead.

Needing a victory to extend the match, the Roughriders fought back in what turned out to be a rollercoaster third set. After a perfectly-placed kill from Gravitt in the middle of the set, YC found itself with a commanding 15-8 lead.

In the blink of an eye, however, EAC went on a 10-2 run and led 18-17. From there, the teams traded points and were tied at 18, 19, 20 and 21. Tied at 21-21, freshman middle blocker Ella Simon gave the Roughriders the lead with a kill. YC would not surrender the lead from then on and went on to win the set 25-22.

In set four, sophomore outside hitter Kate Allan was determined to make it to a fifth set as she tallied four early kills to give YC an early 10-3 lead. Like set three, however, the Gila Monsters were relentless and fought all the way back to a 16-16 tie.

After the tie, Gravitt tallied a couple of nice blocks coupled with some big kills from Whatton to give the Roughriders a 25-19 victory, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.

Unfortunately for the Roughriders, set five ended in heartbreak as the Gila Monsters were able to escape Walraven Gymnasium with a 16-14 set-five win and 3-2 match victory.
