The Yavapai College volleyball team headed down to the valley for its first conference game of the 2022 season, a matchup with the South Mountain Community College Cougars, and left with its first sweep of the season.
On the young season, the Roughriders are now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Set one was the most competitive set of the night as YC narrowly led 7-5 and 16-13 after the first two timeouts. Later in the set, freshman middle blocker Ella Simon aced one over the net for a 19-14 lead as the Roughriders started to take control.
Sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Gravitt then began to dominate the blocking game at the net and freshman libero Kaylee Torres had a flashy one-handed dig that helped the Roughriders secure their 25th point in their 25-17 set-one victory.
In set two, the Roughriders jumped out to an 8-1 lead with big kills from freshman right hitter Allison Birtcil and sophomore outside hitter Kate Allan and didn’t look back as they cruised to a 25-19 victory.
Looking for a sweep, YC dominated the third set and led 16-4 after a South Mountain timeout. After the break, freshman outside hitter Abby Whatton aced one over the net for a 17-4 lead that eventually turned into a 25-10 win to clinch the sweep.
The Roughriders are back in action next Wednesday (September 14) at 7 p.m. on the road in Chandler, Arizona, where they will face the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes.
