Volleyball Bested By Eastern Arizona In Four Sets

The Yavapai College volleyball team returned to Walraven Gymnasium on Wednesday night to start its six-game homestand with a matchup against the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters. EAC eventually prevailed in the match with a four-set victory to drop the Roughriders to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play

Despite a hot-start that featured a 5-0 YC lead in set one, the Gila Monsters took set one with a 25-15 final.

In set two, early kills from sophomore libero Naomi Glasker and freshman middle blocker Ella Simon gave the Roughriders a 10-6 lead. EAC, however, eventually tied the neck-and-neck set at 16.

Both teams then went back-and-forth and battled to a 22-22 tie, before the Gila Monsters went on a 3-1 run at the end of the set to win it and take a 2-0 match lead.

Needing a win to extend the game, freshman setter Anna Bolich started off set three with back-to-back aces, before EAC eventually took an 11-6 lead.

Looking for a spark, the Roughriders turned to sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Gravitt who found an extra gear and began to dominate at the net. Gravitt slammed a kill to the floor after a bad dig attempt from EAC to cut the deficit to 11-9.

From there, Gravitt scored four of the next five points for YC between blocks and kills to pull even with the Gila Monsters at 14-14. Freshman libero Kaylee Torres aided in Gravitt’s effort with some clutch digs on EAC kill attempts.

Later in the set, sophomore outside hitter Kate Allan spiked one into the floor for a kill to give the Roughriders a commanding 23-20 lead. Gravitt, appropriately, finished off the set several points later with a nice block to give YC the 25-22 set-three victory.

In the fourth set, freshman outside hitter Abby Whatton got going with some nice kills en route to another close set that featured a 19-19 tie towards the end.

Unfortunately for YC, the Gila Monsters scored three straight points to go up 22-19 and eventually cruised to a 25-20 victory and 3-1 match victory.
