The Roughriders got off to a hot start in set one as AWC had no answers for outside hitters Kate Allan and Abby Whatton. With the duo spiking everything into the ground and sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Gravitt handling everything at the net, YC found itself with an 18-9 lead after a big-time block from the aforementioned Gravitt.

Yavapai sustained its big lead and eventually won the first set 25-14.

Set two was close the entirety of the way as the largest lead for either team was four points. Late in the set, freshman middle blocker Ella Simon registered a huge block at the net to cut YC’s deficit to just 20-17, however, the Matadors maintained the three-point lead from then on and won set two 25-21.

Tied 1-1 in the pivotal third set, the Roughriders came out strong and built a 10-3 lead after a couple of kills from Allan and Gravitt. Without quit, the Matadors battled back and eventually tied the score up at 17-17.

After seeing their big lead dwindle to a tie, the Roughriders took control of set three, starting with a kill from Allan to go up 18-17. From there, several errors from the Matadors gave YC a 23-19 lead, before Whatton registered kills on YC’s final two points of the set to earn the 25-21 victory.

One set away from victory, the Roughriders battled the Matadors to a 22-22 tie in set four after stellar play from the aforementioned Whatton, Allan and Gravitt. Unfortunately for YC, AWC fought off defeat and took the set 25-23 to force a winner-take-all fifth set.

Down 9-6 in set five, YC went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-12 lead and stood one point away from victory. Ultimately, the night ended in heartbreak for the Roughriders as the Matadors fought back to a 14-14 tie, forced the set all the way to a 17-17 tie and eventually prevailed 19-17 to take the 3-2 match victory and extend their winning streak to 10 games.
