The Highlands Center offers a variety of programs for students and families to help them discover the wonders of nature and become wise caretakers of the land, and August is an example of the variety offered. From Concerts in the Pines and our Grow Native Plant Sale to our Knee-High Naturalists and annual Hiking Spree! the Highlands Center has activities for all ages. 

Music in The Highlands ’22 Sat, Aug 6, 2 SHOWS 3pm and 7pm, $30

Gypsy Soul    “Their music stirs the soul and moves the spirit.”  PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Authentic and excellent are the words most often used to describe Gypsy Soul and their music. on Saturday, August 6th they will be at the Highlands Center’s beautiful outdoor Amphitheater, for two shows at 3pm and 7pm.

Plein Air Painting Workshop with Betty Carr     Mon-Tues, Aug 8-9, 

9am – 3pm, $180   Luminous floral still life’s and landscapes in Watercolor.

This workshop will focus on techniques in painting the effects of light in a floral still life and a landscape setting. Betty Carr is a Master in the American Impressionist Society, AISM Signature.

Grow Native FALL Plant Sale   Begins Online August 9th. Pick-Up Sept 9-10.

Our biannual Grow Native Plant Sale is an event that celebrates the native Arizona landscape. 

Our Fall plant sale features trees and shrubs, w/native willows, walnut, sumac and more!

Life Enrichment Through Nature    Aug 15-19, 9:30-12pm, $120

This course was designed with seniors in mind. Tom Benson, Highlands Center Master Naturalist, has created this course to connect you with the natural world of the Arizona Central Highlands.

Colored Pencil Drawing Series    Aug 22- Sept 2, Mon-Wed-Fri, 9am- 12pm

If you have ever been interested in drawing what you observe in the natural world, then you should attend this program! Join local illustrator and author, Diane Iverson, for the summer drawing series.

Hiking Spree ’22     Aug 27 thru Nov 28 – KICK OFF is Sat, Aug 27 at 9 am

Get your hike on! Hike, or attempt, 8 out of 10 of the hikes before November 28th to be entered in a raffle for a $300 gift certificate from The Hike Shack.

Knee High Naturalists     Tues, Aug 30- Oct 4, 9:30-11 am. $10 per class.

Due to popular demand, we’ve expanded this program to be a 6-week series! Flutter like a butterfly, hoot like an owl, or slither like a snake! Bring your 3–5-year-old little learner to explore and discover our unique environment through the eyes of the animals that live here.
