Second-Half Explosion Propels YC Women’s Soccer Past Cochise

The Yavapai College women’s soccer team headed to the southeast corner of the state to kick off its conference season against the Cochise College Apaches on Saturday night and left with a big-time, 3-0 shutout victory.

The Apaches, who had been receiving national votes, drop to 3-3 overall this season and 0-1 in the conference, while the Roughriders move to 1-0 in conference games and 2-4 overall.

“I am super proud of our team’s effort from the sidelines and on the field,” Head Coach Rozie DeWeese said. “This was an important win against a DI opponent to start conference play. Defensively, we played strong and smart and it was great getting three goals from three different players tonight. Overall, this was a tremendous team effort.”

Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Trail was the story of the night as she faced 21 shots-on-goal and made all 21 saves to take home the win and the shutout.

Trail was peppered frequently in the first half, however, her perfect play on the night kept the Roughriders in it as Yavapai and Cochise headed into halftime tied 0-0.

After the break, the YC offense came out of the locker room like a shot out of a cannon.

Four minutes into the period, freshman forward Julie Reyes gave YC a 1-0 lead, after collecting a ball in traffic, fighting through four Cochise defenders and depositing the ball into the back of the net past the Apache goalkeeper. It was Reyes’ second goal of the season.

Two minutes later, sophomore forward AJ Jones crossed a ball to her wide-open teammate, freshman defender Ziyana De Los Reyes Guerrero, who tapped the ball out of the air and past the sprawling goalkeeper for a 2-0 Roughrider lead.

Just three minutes later, the duo that connected on the second goal swapped places as this time Guerrero dribbled a ball past midfield and sent a perfect pass up the field to Jones who touched a shot perfectly over the goalkeeper and into the net to push the lead to 3-0 in favor of YC.

Seemingly in the blink of an eye, the Roughriders took a three-goal lead in just 10 minutes of second-half play and were in complete control of the match. From there, YC was able to hold the Apaches off the scoresheet until time ran out, clinching the 3-0 victory.

In addition, Guerrero and Jones both took home three points on the night, each with their first goals and assists of the season.
