Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead YC Softball To Victory

Pitching was the key to victory for the Yavapai College softball team in its 2-0 victory over Snead State Community College in its first game of the 2022 NJCAA DI Softball Championship. The No. 2-seeded Roughriders move to 55-4 overall on the season and also move to the winner’s bracket in the tournament.

Freshman pitcher Emily Darwin registered the start inside the circle for YC and was brilliant. Darwin tossed five shutout innings, struck out five Parsons, and allowed just two hits and one walk.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Dix relieved Darwin and was just as dominant in her two shutout innings. Dix struck out five of the six hitters she faced and allowed no baserunners.

The scoring summary on the night was pretty simple: sophomore outfielder Kayla Rodgers launched a two-out two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the third inning. The game-winning hit from Rodgers was her 25th longball of the season.

The other two hits for YC came in the form of freshman outfielder Sierra Griego’s single in the bottom of the third and sophomore utility woman Alyssa Rosales’ double in the bottom of the fifth.

Rosales also made a nice diving play on a foul ball to her left in the top of the first inning to end the frame.
