 No. 2-Ranked Yavapai Softball Set For Scottsdale, Glendale Matchups This Week

After a weekend without softball, the No. 2-ranked Yavapai College softball squad is back on the field this week with a road doubleheader on Tuesday against Scottsdale and home doubleheader on Saturday against Glendale.

The Games

Softball commences on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the Roughriders will take on the Artichokes with game one’s first pitch set for 1 p.m. After a few off days, Yavapai hosts the Glendale Community College Gauchos on Saturday at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott, Arizona, for a doubleheader that starts at noon. 

Live stats will be available for both doubleheaders on GoRoughriders.com/Live while live streaming will also be available for Saturday’s home games. 

The Artichokes

Scottsdale comes into its matchup with Yavapai with a 2-10 overall and conference record. Last time out, the Artichokes were swept by Eastern Arizona. 

The Gauchos

Glendale comes into its matchup with the Roughriders with an overall record of 8-6 and conference record of 7-5. Before heading to Prescott on Saturday, the Gauchos will host Central on Tuesday. 

The Roughriders

Ranked No. 2 in the country, Yavapai comes into the week with an overall record of 21-2 and conference record of 13-1. The Roughriders also continue to lead the country in the following statistical categories: runs scored, hits, doubles, homers, runs batted in, extra base hits, total bases, slugging percentage and pitching shutouts. 

At the plate, Mia Weckel, Cheyenne Sandoval, Lovey Kepa’a, Makena Riggs, Jasmine Moreno, Kayla Rodgers, Yaya Kaaialii, Ashley Fields and Alyssa Rosales all continue to hit over .400 with four-or-more homers and 20+ RBIs. 

Kepa’a, Riggs and Moreno are all tied for the team lead in homers with 10 while Kepa’a currently holds the RBI crown with 40 (leading the team and the country). 

Inside the circle, The Emilys (Emily Dix and Emily Darwin) continue to dominate opposing hitters. Dix currently holds an 8-1 record, 2.18 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 51.1 innings pitched. Darwin has a 10-1 record, 1.04 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched. 

Player To Watch

Riggs has homered in three-consecutive games including a two-homer day in the Roughriders game-two victory over South Mountain. 

One Last Thing

The Roughriders have homered in every game this season, except for two. In those contests, Yavapai defeated Snow 9-0 and defeated Mesa 13-0.
