This morning, at just after 7:30 am, officers responded to a call of a major two-vehicle crash in the area of State Route 89A and Granite Dells Parkway on the eastbound side of the road.
The first officer on scene found two severely damaged vehicles and the drivers of both vehicles appeared to have significant life-threatening injuries as both were unconscious. One of the vehicles involved was a blue Toyota pickup truck and inside the back seat were two juveniles, ages two and four, who had also suffered injuries from the collision.
Our Traffic Safety Section was called out to the scene to conduct an investigation. At this time it appears that a 2019 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 33-year-old Prescott Valley resident, was traveling westbound on State Route 89A in the number one lane. For an unknown reason the vehicle left the roadway, veering left, and crossed the depressed center median of the highway. At this same time a 2016 Dodge 5500 pulling a trailer full of masonry block, driven by a 44-year-old resident of Prescott Valley, was heading eastbound on State Route 89A in the number 2 lane. The driver of the Toyota failed to correct his direction and drove head-on into the Dodge truck at a high rate of speed.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and despite their best efforts, both drivers were pronounced deceased on the scene. Both of the children were airlifted to Phoenix-area hospitals and both are listed in stable condition at this time with non-life-threatening injuries. The next of kin have been notified in this case.
The exact cause of this crash is still under investigation. The roadway was closed for most of the morning while officers utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle to investigate the scene as well as other crime scene mapping technology. This caused significant traffic issues for most of the morning on 89A and State Route 89.
