11-year-old accused of starting brush fire that caused $30,000 in damage

An 11-year-old boy is accused of starting a brush fire that destroyed two buildings and causing $30,000 worth of damage in Yavapai County.

Authorities say the boy has been charged with arson, criminal damage, endangerment, and a misdemeanor for reckless burning.

The fire ignited Saturday northeast of Camp Verde in the now-defunct Beaver Creek Golf Course. Two uninhabited structures were destroyed, and the fire crept nearly destroyed a home.

Witnesses told police they saw three boys playing with aerosol cans and a lighter before the blaze ignited.

Investigators say the 11-year-old intentionally started the fire, while the two other boys tried to stop him and attempted to put out the fire before it grew out of control.
