Men’s Soccer Set For Region Championship Battle With Arizona Western

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – It’s time for playoff soccer for the Yavapai College men’s soccer team as the Roughriders are set to take on the No. 9-ranked Arizona Western College Matadors in the 2022 NJCAA Division I Region I Championship Match.

The match is set to take place on Friday, October 28, in Yuma, Arizona, with gametime set for 4:30 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game in person will be able to watch the livestream on GoRoughriders.com/Live

The winner of the match will earn the chance to compete for a district championship while the loser of the match will see its season come to an abrupt end. The Roughriders have earned 23 region championships since the program’s first season in 1989. 

The Matadors

Ranked No. 9 in NJCAA Division I and first in the ACCAC, Arizona Western comes into its matchup with Yavapai at 13-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play. During the regular season, the Matadors earned a victory in their first game, fell to CSN, rattled off nine wins in a row, lost to Yavapai and finished the season with three-consecutive victories. 

The Roughriders

Yavapai comes into its matchup with Arizona Western at 9-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play. During the regular season, the Roughriders enjoyed an unbeaten streak of six games from September 24 – October 11 while totaling five shutouts on the year. Its losses came to No. 20-ranked Mesa, No. 1-ranked Pima and No. 2-ranked Phoenix. 

Previous Matchup

The Roughriders and Matadors previously matched up this season on October 5 in Prescott, Arizona, at Ken Lindley Field. In the match, the then-No. 7-ranked Matadors scored first, however, sophomore defender Alejandro Cardona tied things up late in the first half and then headed in the game-winner in OT to give YC the 2-1 victory and snap AWC’s nine-game winning streak. 

One Last Thing

The Roughriders defeated the Matadors 1-0 in the region title match in the spring of 2021, however, the Matadors got their revenge by defeating YC 2-0 in the region title match in the fall of 2021.
