Injury Accident on South SR 89 Involves Two Vehicles and Bicyclist

On 6/22/2022 at approximately 9:41 am, Chino Valley Officers responded to a vehicle collision on South State Route 89, at Road 2 South. Reporting parties advised that the collision involved two vehicles and a bicyclist.

When officers arrived, they found two heavily damaged vehicles, in the intersection, blocking the southbound lanes of South SR 89. The vehicles involved were a white 1995 Chevrolet Astro Van, driven by an 18-year-old male from Chino Valley, and a white 2007 Honda CRV, driven by a 53-year-old male from Chino Valley. There was an 18-year-old female from Chino Valley that was a passenger in the Chevrolet at the time of the collision. A bicyclist, a 71-year-old male out of Prescott, was also involved in the collision.

Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and LifeLine responded to the location to treat the four patients involved in the collision. Traffic on South SR 89 was diverted onto East Road 2 South for approximately one hour to allow medical personnel to treat all patients and Native Air to land a helicopter in the 1000 block of SR 89. The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet suffered moderate injuries and were both transported to an area hospital by ambulance for continued treatment. The bicyclist also suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Honda suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. At last update, all patients are in stable condition and their injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Astro Van was travelling south on SR 89 and according to witnesses on scene, possibly ran the red light at Road 2 South. The Honda CRV was northbound on SR 89 and was in the middle of the intersection of Road 2 South waiting to turn left onto West Road 2 South. As the Honda was completing its turn, the Chevrolet stuck the passenger side of it, causing both vehicles to lose control and travel towards a group of bicycle riders that were waiting at the intersection to cross over the highway from West Road 2 South to East Road 2 South. As a result, one of the bicyclists was struck by one of the vehicles and went down.

At this time, the investigation is on-going and the identifications of all involved will be held pending their families being notified and the completion of the investigation.

The Chino Valley Police Department would like to thank motorist for their understanding and patience while the roadway was closed and temporary detours were provided. We also want to thank our partnering agencies for their assistance, including the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority, Lifeline Ambulance, Arizona Department of Transportation, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, Native Air, and ACT Towing.
