Gurianov scores in OT to send Stars to first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 20 years

The Dallas Stars have been the comeback kids throughout the postseason and Monday night was no different.

The Stars trailed 2-0 well into the third period, until captain Jamie Benn got his squad on the board, followed by another marker when Joel Kiviranta scored his fourth goal of the playoffs with just under four minutes remaining of regulation to force the game into overtime.

Denis Gurianov was the overtime hero, scoring three minutes and 36 seconds into the first overtime period, and the Stars eliminated the top-seeded Vegas Golden Knights in five games to clinch their first Stanley Cup appearance in two decades.

Gurianov made little headlines until this year’s playoffs. Selected 12th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, the Russia native exploded for four goals in game six of the semi-finals against the Calgary Flames.

After winning the Stanley Cup in 1999, the Stars made the finale again the following year, losing in six games to the New Jersey Devils.

Despite their triumph, the Stars have had a tumultuous season. The team fired head coach Jim Montgomery in December 2019 due to his alcohol abuse before hiring Rick Bowness to take over the helm. The 65-year-old interim head coach recorded a record of 20-13-5 during the regular season.
