On one of the most impressive streaks in college sports history, the No. 2-ranked Yavapai College softball team is set for a heavyweight fight on Tuesday as it takes on the No. 1-ranked (NJCAA Division II) and defending National Champion Phoenix College Bears in Phoenix, Arizona. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. and live stats will be available on GoRoughriders.com/Live.
Phoenix College comes into its matchup with the Roughriders ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA, 12-2 overall and 10-2 within the ACCAC. Last time out, the Bears swept Pima with scores of 11-0 and 19-1.
Yavapai stepped on the gas to start the season and hasn’t slowed down since. The Riders are 20-1 overall, 12-0 within the conference, and have earned 19-consecutive run-rule victories. They continue to lead the country in runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, extra-base hits, total bases, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and pitching shutouts.
The pitching staff comprised of Emily Dix, Emily Darwin, Abby Cruz and Genavie Espinoza currently holds a combined ERA of 1.45 while only allowing 23 earned runs. At the plate, Mia Weckel, Alyssa Rosales, Kayla Rodgers, Makena Riggs, Lovey Kepa’a, Yaya Kaaialii, Cheyenne Sandoval, Ashley Fields and Jasmine Moreno all hold batting averages above .400, four-or-more homers and 20-plus RBIs.
Player To Watch
Sophomore pitcher Emily Dix has earned eight consecutive victories and ACCAC Pitcher of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. Look for the Roughrider ace to continue to dominate inside the circle.
One Last Thing
Last season, the Bears were one of just four teams that defeated the Roughriders.
